We live in a time where we've become so used to trash and garbage that it doesn't phase us too often as to how much we waste in a day.

One groups that is dedicated to reversing that trend and bringing down the amount of garbage people create is the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council (SWRC). The group is actually a non-profit organization that started in the 90's.

Throughout the year, the SWRC holds different events to show people how to cut down on your trash, especially how much food is wasted yearly.

Its hard to believe, but 31 billion dollars worth of food is wasted annually, and most of it is probably due to a misconception with "best before" dates on packages.

"All these various codes, you got best before, and sell by, and use by, and all these things, they're not even really really that consistent," Naomi Mihilewicz, Administration and Communications Coordinator for the SWRC. "For the most part those are meant for grocery stores to be able to rotate their stock. It is in no way and indication of safety, which I think people kind of get a little confused about."

She added that you can trust your senses when it comes to food, if it looks and smells good, it should be good to go, but, you should take the labeling that comes with raw meat a little more seriously.

Not just with food, but people can also recycle more than they might think they'd be able to.

"We are very big proponents of something called a circular economy," Mihilewicz said. "So that's where anything, any resource that comes into our use should be in some sort of cycle where it can go back and be reused, and it never winds up as this sort of linear path of lets get it, use it, and throw it in the garbage."

To help Saskatchewan residents better understand what can be recycled and where you can recycle it, they have an online tool to help people find locations where it is possible.

Also online, they have more information about their organization, upcoming events, and waste-reduction tips on various pages.

The SWRC has their Waste ReForum 2018 coming this April, from the 18th to the 20th.
