Wanting to assist the Moose Jaw Police with an ongoing crime or investigation isn't out of the ordinary, but local officers would also like to remind residents that safety should always come first.

For many years Police have been aided by people within the community, such as bystanders, good samaritans or even some groups who designate themselves as a neighborhood watch group.

The local Police Service appreciates their assistance and there are a few helpful steps people can take, such as calling Police first while a crime is in progress, keeping track of a culprit from a long safe distance away, or providing information of the direction someone has run.

"First and foremost we want to make sure everyone is safe. Approaching any kind of crime in progress or any person who may be suspicious - we do not want that to happen," explained Sgt. Trish Seman. "If anything like that is happening, please call the Moose Jaw Police Service."

A group on Facebook has been getting a lot of attention lately as well as a lot of support, as a large group of people who call Moose Jaw home want lower rates of petty crimes like theft and vandalism. That being said, Sgt. Seman said no group is directly tied to our Police force.

"We appreciate any help that we can get from the community. With the neighborhood watch group, they obviously want a safer community, so they're out there to watch their own neighborhood, and if there's any crime or anything unusual then they contact police," said Sgt. Seman.

"We are not affiliated with any of the neighborhood group watches that are on Facebook or anything like that, but we are definitely open to any questions or concerns that they have. It's always nice to have an extra set of eyes out there. We can't be everywhere at once, [so] any kind of help that we can get is a bonus for us and a bonus for the community."

This Facebook group has also made it clear to its members that the first thing you should always do is contact the local authorities in any situation. They have also had a meeting with the Police force to better understand their role as citizens and to aid the Police in the best way possible during or after an incident.
