A summertime vacation in a recreation vehicle is an exciting concept for many, but the reality isn't always the same as the dream. CAA Saskatchewan wants to remind you to ensure your RV is roadworthy before heading out onto the highway.

Christine Niemczyk said get it safety checked so you don't find yourself stranded on the highway.

“We tend to bring out our RVs and trailers and campers when we're ready to hit the road but you want to check your RV just as you would your regular passenger vehicle,” she said. “So, everything from the wheels on your recreation vehicles, your boat trailers, your camper trailers should be checked as well. You want to check the wheel lug nuts need to be set to the proper torque and to make sure they don't come loose or come off the trailer.”

She said wheel bearings should be greased and adjusted annually, and check your trailer suspension springs as they may also need to be inspected for wear.

“Read the vehicle owner's manual for your RV,” she said. “Check the mechanical or maintenance information, and talk with a specialist to make sure that it's all primed, ready to go and safe so that you don't find yourself stranded on the highway.”

Niemczyk said sharing the road with many other RVs and campers, motorcyclists, even farm machinery requires following a few rules of thumb.

“Take your time, plan your route, don't rush, make sure your vehicle, your RV, your camper is safe to go and let's share the road responsibly, and safely as best as we can,” she said.

She added if you're planning a trip in a recreational vehicle this summer, having a CAA Roadside Assistance policy is a great way to ensure even the unpredictable is less stressful.
