It was a small but mighty group that gathered at Riverview Collegiate High School in Moose Jaw to discuss an important topic.

The students, staff and community members participated in a worldwide initiative called 1 Billion Rising. The event takes place on Valentine's Day (February 14th) each year to spread awareness about domestic violence, with the hopes of one day putting an end to it.

Part of 1 Billion Rising is learning a dance that organizers upload to the the organization's website to show victims of domestic violence that there are people standing up against it all over the world.

"It's something that not many people show or showcase because it's something that people don't really want to talk about," explained Grade 12 student, Bridgette Hittinger. "I think having that dance is a less harsh way to talk about it and putting awareness on the subject."

Hittinger was one of many students who embraced the movement and was impressed by the amount of people who used their lunch hour to show support.

"With us being so small we don't really get to do things like this or experience things like this. But even with having a small school it shows that we can still put on things like this and spread awareness. I think it was an honour to have this a part of our school because doing this was cool as we got people to participate which isn't common for our school."

Riverview High School has less than 150 students from grades 9 to 12, and roughly 50 people supported the cause and learned the movements to go along with the dance.

Hittinger encourages other schools and organizations to participate in 1 Billion rising in future years, as it's a way to have fun while also talking about an important subject.

This was the first time the local high school participated, and was the only group in Moose Jaw to do so.

A club within the high school, under the direction of Nick Lamb, is currently working on the video pieces captured on Wednesday and will upload it to the 1 Billion Rising website once it's complete.
