The traffic lights at Main Street North and Diefenbaker Drive will soon be operational.

And when they are, you'll need to adjust your speed.

Monday night, Moose Jaw city council approved a new 60 km/hr limit that will run between the Highway 2 overpass south to Canadian Tire.

Colin Prang of the Engineering department explained that vehicle speed in the area needed to be reduced for the lights to become operational, in accordance with the provincial Highways Act.

"The central concern is limited stopping," Prang said. "Particularly in winter driving (conditions) at the current speed limit of 70 kilometres per hour."

Prang alluded to the location of the new hospital on Diefenbaker Drive, and says that was the impetus behind getting traffic lights at that intersection in the first place.

"In combination with all of the increased traffic through business growth and development in the area, it's really caused this corridor to become more congested."

The changes are expected to be implemented sometime in February.
