When you click on their website, you'll read, "The Bentley Moose Jaw offers a warm welcome and retirement living options for active seniors.  Conveniently located by shops and many amenities, The Bentley Moose Jaw Retirement Residence also offers activities that you'll love."

Revera The Bentley Moose Jaw, located downtown at 425 - 4th Avenue Northwest, is celebrating 20 years in operation this year and inviting the community to take part by having a look online and to take a tour in person.

Executive director, Jeff Fox and sales consultant, Rod Bearchell, both lifelong Moose Javians, told us more about The Bentley, the anniversary and much more.

"I worked for home care 20 years ago and we got to tour The Bentley it when it was under construction," Fox said, adding it's hard to believe 20 years have gone by since then.

Bearchell has been with Revera for just over a year and says he loves going to work every day.

"It actually just kind of feels like home.  You know, the staff is awesome, and the residents have become kind of extended family, for sure."

The Bentley and their staff are focused on lifestyle, Fox told us.

"It's a family here.  We get to know the residents and they get to know us.  It's located downtown so a lot of the residents will walk to the CO-OP to do a little shopping.  I've been here since November, and it's been a fun ride.  I'm really enjoying it here."

As the executive director, Fox is in charge of operations - everything from sales to environmental services and culinary.

And, as Sales Consultant, Bearchell is tasked with getting people in the building.

"I spent 21 years in the real estate world here in Moose Jaw.  It's very similar to what I did with real estate.  It's people that are inquiring and, you know, I've been stressing the fact that we are an independent living facility.  It's not like we're a nursing home or a care home... It's very important for people to know that our residents here are very active.  They still have their own lives, and we try to actually give them back some of their independence and not take it away," Bearchell explained.

In fact, Fox says staff at The Bentley takes time every day to offer a number of recreational options.

"Yes, we currently have five different recreational options each and every single day.  We focus on social, spiritual, physical and mental well-being.  So, residents here can interact with any of those programs and, we have residents that have their buddies that they go for coffee at A & W with. So, there's a lot of different options here," Fox told us.

And don't let the "independent living" thing fool you.  Residents at The Bentley are catered to each and every day.  Meals are prepared three times a day with a 24-hour bistro available along with the recreation and fitness programs, a salon, a theatre, a spiritual room, a backyard patio, bus service and much more, including housekeeping.

"If I could live at The Bentley, it's 55 and over, I'm not quite there yet, I would live here," Fox said with a laugh.

"Some of our residents who were hesitant before moving in have found they absolutely love it.  They don't have to cook or clean.  They just take part in the recreation programs or do their own thing," Fox added.

Units at The Bentley include mini-refrigerators and microwave ovens for residents who don't always want to leave their quarters for every meal. Fox also says, there are plans in place to construct a community kitchen on the 2nd floor of the facility for those times that residents actually want to make a meal or bake some cookies.

And, while Bearchell estimates the average age of residents at The Bentley is probably around 80, he wants to stress anyone aged 55 and older is welcome with The Bentley offering two-bedroom, one-bedroom and studio suites.

"A studio suite, you know, you think of it as sort of looking over the top of your bed to see your TV but really, we've got some good-sized studios here where you have your four-piece bath and your little kitchenette area on the side, and it opens up into one bigger room.  So, you can kind of set up your bedroom on one side and a little sitting area to watch TV on the other.  So, when you say studios, I think a lot of times it's misunderstood.  Anybody interested in having a look, we'd be more than happy to set them up with a tour and they might be surprised at some of the things we have to offer here, for sure," Bearchell said.

The Bentley's website includes a look at the facility including the various floor plans you can choose from but, Bearchell says it's really best to book a tour and have a look around.

"We're just trying to make sure, with COVID, that we're booking ahead.  So, anybody who wants to give me a call down here, we'll set up a time for them to come down.  We have a reserved parking spot right out front, and we even put their name on it so you kind of feel that VIP treatment before you even come inside.  I'm really looking forward to having some people come in and have a look," Bearchell said.

"Just about every resident that's moved in since I started here just over a year ago has told me they really wished they would have moved to The Bentley earlier," Bearchell added.

And, while Bearchell brought the COVID-19 pandemic up when talking about booking tours, Fox is proud to say COVID has not been an issue at The Bentley.

"We have not had a positive case, thank goodness.  There's lots of really good protocols that Revera has in place to keep people safe.  You know, we do surveillance on our staff and luckily all of our residents have received their first vaccine and slowly but surely our staff are being vaccinated," Fox said.

And, speaking of staff, you'll find a large number of local people coming and going at The Bentley each and every day.

"We have 32 staff," Fox said.  "We've got young people working in the kitchen, doing dishes and serving and we have housekeeping, dietary staff and administration people," Fox said.

The pandemic has so far put 20th-anniversary celebrations on hold but, Fox is hoping to invite the community to come together in the fall.

"We're very hopeful, in the fall of 2021, we can celebrate the anniversary.  Let's hope the vaccine goes through quickly and we're safe and, if we're allowed to do so, we'll have an open house and celebration," Fox told us.

In the meantime, Bearchell wants the community to know The Bentley has suites available "right across the board" from one and two-bedroom units and studio suites with special pricing on right now.
