Most often we think of the police as a way to either stop or investigate crime but police are also focused on how to prevent crime from even happening in the first place. Here in Moose Jaw, one of the major strategies is to reach our to students and explain what happens when you get involved with crime or have a momentary lack in judgement.

Constable Kyle Cunningham is the Moose Jaw Police Service School Resource Officer.  He's been a teacher overseas and was a substitute teacher here in Moose Jaw before pinning on the badge. His past experience is what gives him the tools to connect to the students and teach them about making good decisions.

With 21 schools and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, there are thousands of students that he meets with every year. He talks about the common things that can lead to criminal activity but he's also trying to lend a helping hand.

"I think a lot of people use the buzz words like bullying and cyber bullying but what I see is a lot of anxiety in students. They're having a tough time just coping." said Cunningham.

Cunningham goes on to say that its an important job because with most of these kids, the resource officer is their first point of contact with the law. He wants them to see a police officer as a positive role model and not someone to be afraid of.
