It was what organizers called a "rally against privatization".

Outside of Saskatchewan Party MLA Greg Lawrence's office on June 22, supporters turned out to speak out with their concerns over the future of Crown corporations and public services in light of the recent closure of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company and the changes voted in by the Sask Party to allow the sale of up to 49% of Crown companies.

Speakers at the event included Official Opposition Leader Trent Wotherspoon and the Chief Steward for Unifor Local 3, Lorne Hill.

Wotherspoon spoke to what the NDP claims is a growing opposition to the 2017 budget cuts and that more and more people, like those in Moose Jaw, "are standing up and calling out the Sask Party's damaging agenda."

He said, "Pretty much on a daily and weekly basis in every corner of our province, we see people coming together to stand up for people in our province, our Crown corporations, our classrooms, rallying and fighting back.  That's what we see here in Moose Jaw; we see good people, standing up for their community and their province," adding, "He (Brad Wall) is attacking our Crown corporations which have been built by and for Saskatchewan people."

Unifor Local 3 represents thousands of Crown corporation workers at SaskTel, SaskEnergy, SaskPower, and SaskWater in Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Weyburn, Estevan, Gravelbourg and Assiboia, as well as the workers of the Wakamow Valley Authority here in Moose Jaw, and the 78 members of SecureTech in Yorkton.  From a union standpoint and as employees of Crown corporations, Lorne Hill said that the rally has been several years in the making.

Hill explained, "We've always really been concerned about the possibility of the privatization of our Crowns and we see here with the provincial budgets in 2016 and especially here in the 2017 budget, it's not just something that we thought was going to happen anymore, it actually could be a reality."

Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Hill said that he wants to make an impact of positive changes and will take action by seeking the nomination to be the NDP candidate for Moose Jaw-Wakamow, in the next provincial election.
