The rain falling on your vehicle's windshields and home windows is also falling on the fields for farmers, and they couldn't be happier.

After an extremely dry winter and spring, the much-needed moisture is causing a sigh of relief around the province.

Kerry Olson, manager of Moose Jaw's Parrish and Heimbecker said farmers they talk to are happy with the amount of rain they’ve gotten.

Moose Jaw's rainfall total as of 3:30pm on Friday afternoon.

“We’re certainly gathering the information...”, said Olson. “We’ve got decent rain throughout the whole trade area surrounding Moose Jaw. On average, there’s a half inch to an inch, some places a little bit more.”

Olson said producers were happy with the rain because of the condition of crops.

“Crops were suppressed,” he said. “They were really needing that drink of fresh rain. And it’s very much appreciated. We were sitting in the triangle, and now the triangle has got a little zip to it. And it’s certainly looking a lot better than it was a week ago.”

For some producers, canola has been difficult to emerge this year.

“We’re seeing early flag-leaf stages with the cereal crops that came through, too,” Olson said. “ A couple of places where it was seeded early and getting into those early stages where it was almost setting seed, and promoting the flag-leaf stage in that sequence too."

As of 3:30 pm on Friday afternoon, Moose Jaw residents had about 2 inches of precipitation collected in their rain gauge.
