The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) will now have Wildfire and Provincial Emergency Services unit under their umbrella.

On Wednesday, Government Relations Minister Warren Kaeding, with the help of Environment Minister Dustin Duncan, made the announcement which will see changes to the mandate of the SPSA in 2019.

“Our government’s commitment to public safety and enhancing citizen-centred services is paramount, and over the year’s emergency management, and wildfire response staff have done a tremendous job for the people of Saskatchewan,” Kaeding said in a written release.  “Becoming part of the SPSA will allow for greater internal co-ordination and co-operation while providing a more streamlined provincial response when emergencies strike.  Ultimately this will lead to better service for the people of Saskatchewan.”

Duncan noted that despite some moving pieces, he believes this new move will not have an impact on previous services as they work they do is important.

“Wildfire Management staff provide a vital service that protects our people, communities, and infrastructure, especially in northern Saskatchewan,” Duncan said.  “I am confident this outstanding service will continue as we transition existing government resources to the SPSA and improve service delivery to support communities in need.”

Along with the head office that is located in Regina and will remain there, the province said additional offices for dispatch and wildlife centres will soon pop up in communities such as Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
