A deal has been struck between provinces on inter-provincial liquor limits.

After a three day meeting in New Brunswick, the Council of the Federation made a deal to double the amount of liquor that individuals can bring across provincial borders for personal use.

In Alberta and Manitoba they have no limits at all currently. In New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories and Newfoundland and Labrador, limits are so low it makes it illegal to cross with anything more than small amounts.

As for the remaining provinces, their personal limits are mostly similar, being nine litres of wine, three litres of spirits and 24.6 litres of beer. After the deal made late Thursday, the limits listed above will be doubled, at least, to 18 litres of wine, six litres of spirits and 49.2 litres of beer.

Since New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories and Newfoundland and Labrador have such low limits, they are going to rise to the other 8 jurisdictions, making it a more intense change for those three.

The provinces and territories have agreed to implement the legislation and regulations within 18 months, which means by 2020 it should be easier for consumers to access and transport alcohol across provincial borders.
