A ridesharing and taxi bylaw in the works in Moose Jaw may come into effect as early as September.

But if you're a prospective driver, taking part in ridesharing isn't just as simple as getting an app and waiting for the riders to come in.

SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy said there are some qualifications needed.

“It’s really up to the municipalities to decide what the local rules and requirements are going to be and whether they allow ridesharing in their communities, but from the provincial perspective, there are a number of regulations and requirements that ridesharing companies have to meet and ridesharing drivers if they want to work for a ridesharing company,” said McMurchy.

McMurchy, a spokesman for SGI, explained drivers will need to have a satisfactory driving history.

“That means less than 12 points under the driver improvement program in the last two years,” McMurchy said. “And you can’t have any impaired driving suspensions in the last ten years.”

Drivers must pass a criminal record check every year, and can't have over 12 points on their licence over the last two years. Taxi, limousine and rideshare drivers all have to pass an annual criminal record check, he said.

“And there are also vehicle inspection requirements,” McMurchy said. “So they have to get their vehicle inspected annually at any of the vehicle inspection stations in Saskatchewan.”
