How do you pass the time when you take a road trip rest?  For Rob Milner, he gets to work.

It was an uncommon sight for locals and passersby as Milner, a professional wood carver from Atlantic Canada, pulled out his chainsaw and made some fresh carvings on Moose Jaw's north service road on Friday.

He explained how he got his start.

"I started out of boredom and a little bit of a health issue where I was very sick for a long time and I needed something to do.  So I started making chairs with a chainsaw and now I do a whole lot more than chairs."

Milne said that his inspiration comes from Canadian wildlife, mostly North American spirit animals like bears, eagles, owls, turtles.

He added that not all of his work can be done in a day, "Bears can take me anywhere from a few minutes, to days or weeks. Depends on the size, the level of detail, how much furring, how much sealant or if you choose to seal it, all these things matter."

Milner made his pit stop in town, on his way to the "Transformation on the Shore" carving competition in Campbell River, BC next week.
