SaskPower is reminding farmers to be cautious around power lines this harvest season.

Since April 1, there have been 240 incidents of farm machinery contacting power lines reported in Saskatchewan.

According to Joel Cherry, a representative of SaskPower, situational awareness is key.

"Before you even head out, plan your work for the day. Get a good idea of where all the powerlines are located on your property."

Cherry said that SaskPower notices power line incidents occurring "frequently" throughout spring seeding, with another rise during harvest.

Cherry also said that all incidents are preventable, and it comes down to getting enough rest and staying healthy and alert even on long days.

"Something that you can do to prevent that are to prevent fatigue by getting proper rest, drinking plenty of water and taking breaks during the day."

If your farm equipment contacts a power line, SaskPower recommends that you stay in the cab and call SaskPower at 306-310-2220 or call 911.

If the vehicle has caught fire, you must exit:

• Make sure no wires are in your way.
• Cross your arms and put your feet together.
• Jump as far away as you can and hop at least ten metres, or 33 feet away – do not touch your vehicle.

On average, 13 people are killed on Saskatchewan farms each year. Of these fatal injuries, 75% involve machinery such as grain trucks, semis, tractors and combines. Most incidents occur in the farm yard and of all serious injuries that happen, 14% involve youth.
