Car dealerships and manufacturers around Canada are very worried after U.S. President, Donald Trump, threatened to impose 25% tariffs on U.S. vehicle imports from Canada.

Owner of Band City Auto in Moose Jaw, Tim Giokus, explains just one of the many problems with the potential tariffs.

"I'll guarantee you, most of the manufacturer's stores you see that are owned by people, if this were to actually hit two years from now, these stores will be operated by the manufacturer. They just put a general manager in and the parent company owns the store."

These aren't the only jobs Giokus says will be affected; the market demand for new vehicles will begin to fall off as they become too expensive to afford, which in turn would cause Canadian manufacturers to cut costs and jobs.

Giokus gives an example of how the tariffs would affect our vehicle prices.

"The biggest selling vehicle in Canada right now is pick-up trucks, and they're all manufactured in the United States. You know, 25% on top of what you're already paying for a truck, which is already in the $60,000 - $70,000 price range. Not too sure many people want to pay $90,000 for those trucks."

Although it remains uncertain whether the imposed tariffs will go through or not, the impact it would have on Canadians is clear.
