2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Poppy.

Since the flower was designated as the national symbol of remembrance, plenty has changed. Honouring those who serve our country isn't one of them.

This year, for the first time ever, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 59 will be able to accept donations via debit and credit cards while out in the community.

“We have tap and go donation boxes now, where you can get your poppy and tap your debit or credit card and there's set amounts of $2, $5 or $10. There's eight of them that will be located around Moose Jaw,” explained branch president, Roy LaBuick.

The cashless donation option is something the local Legion hopes to continue in the years to come.

This Saturday, Oct. 30, the Legion is hosting their annual Poppy Day Sale in a number of places across the city.

These pop-up locations include the downtown area, The Town N’ Country Mall, Safeway and along Thatcher Drive.

LaBuick says they are still looking for additional volunteers.

“If anybody would like to volunteer to help for one hour this coming Saturday to sell some poppies, please give the office a call at 692-5453.”

Poppy boxes will also be returning to local businesses this year. All money raised stays in Moose Jaw to help local veterans.

In addition to selling poppies, preparations are well underway for the upcoming Remembrance Day service in Moose Jaw.

The event will be live-streamed on Facebook, with limited seating available to watch the ceremony in person at Jones Parkview Funeral Home on Hochelaga Street West.

The Legion will also provide a viewing of the event at the local branch, doors open at 10 am and will be followed by their annual open house.
