The Moose Jaw Police Service received three reports of catalytic converter thefts over a 24 hour period earlier this month.

These thefts are not uncommon across North America as the metals used to make the converters have become very expensive, so thieves will re-sell the parts for a profit.

Constable Kyle Cunningham says it is easy for thieves to take the part if they know what they are doing.

"It's pretty quick, it doesn't take very long with the right tools to cut it out," says Cunningham.

There are no serial numbers on the catalytic converters so it is very difficult to track.

Cunningham says keeping your car in a secure place can reduce the risk of theft.

"Vehicles parked inside a garage is your best bet because people can't access them, otherwise park on a well-lit and well-travelled street," says Cunningham.

There have been no reports of stolen converters since and the thefts are still under investigation.

Cunningham says if you notice suspicious activity, notify the police.
