SGI and local law enforcement were focusing on speeding and aggressive drivers during last month's Traffic Safety Spotlight.

"During the April Traffic Safety Spotlight on speeding and aggressive driving," shared SGI Manager of Media Relations, Tyler McMurchy, "there were 4,873 tickets issued by police. That is a lot of speeders."

"And it just got more expensive as the beginning of May. The cost of speeding tickets across the board in Saskatchewan went up. So hopefully, people got all the speeding out of their system in April and will now be obeying the speed limit a lot more in May. Because if they don't, it's going to cost them."

The base fine went up by $30 and the charge for every kilometer over the speed limit doubled. This means that ticket for speeding 20 km/hr over in a school zone will cost you $310. The cost for speeding in a construction zone with workers present, if you are going 80 km/hr you will pay $440 and if you're going 100 km/hr, your fine will be $1,008.

"As far as the traffic safety concern, speeding is definitely a problem. It is one of the leading causes of collisions that injure and kill people on Saskatchewan roads. And it's something that we like to remind people that those posted speed limits are there for a reason."

Police were also on the lookout for other traffic offences as well.

"We saw more than 500 distracted driving offences including 426 related to cellphone use during the month of April. These are things that police are always looking for."

"The monthly results that we report every single month highlight the fact that police are very good at catching impaired drivers. There were quite a number that are reported each and every month. In the month of April, there were 269 impaired driving offences reported. Those include 265 Criminal Code charges."

The current traffic Safety Spotlight is on impaired driving.

"If everyone just drove sober, drove without distractions, obeyed speed limits and buckled up, we'd see a lot fewer collisions, injuries and fatalities."
