Calgary Police are getting into a fight with their union after announcing officers will not be allowed to consume cannabis, even when off-duty or on vacation.

The decision comes in advance of legalization later this month and has sparked a debate on how far an employer can reach into an employees private life away from the office.

The police service says they want more details on how long cannabis stays in the system and impacts judgment, especially for people who are trusted with firearms.

Here in Moose Jaw, the local Police Service won't be changing anything saying cannabis will be treated similarly to alcohol or any other substance that alters your mental state, saying they will follow the Saskatchewan Municipal Police Discipline Regulations.
