The Moose Jaw Police Service has announced it will once again participate in the provincial Gun Amnesty Program.

It's an initiative that allows residents to have their unwanted firearms picked up by the police service without the risk of facing any legal consequences for any reason.

"This is an opportunity actually to call us and we will come and pickup the firearms. Its going to be a situation where we are just interested in the firearms, so please give us a call and we will pick them up," explained Sgt. Trish Seman. "It commences March 25th and it concludes April 19th...there will be plenty of time for people to call us.”

The reason for the "no questions asked" policy is because the police service are just wanting to take firearms from anyone who isn't a registered owner.

“I think it's important that we take guns off the street for one thing, but there’s a lot of people out there who have firearms who don't want them anymore, don't use them anymore, aren't interested in getting licenses for whatever reason. This is a safe way that the police service can come, no questions asked, we’ll just pick them up and turn them in.”

The Police have stated that they do not want any firearms brought to them or into the police department. Once someone contacts them they will make the arrangements.

“We don't want any firearms on the street or at the Moose Jaw Police Service so please just contact the Moose Jaw Police Service at 694-7605. Give us your information and arrangements will be made to turn over the firearms to the police. The police will attend to your residence and we will pick up the firearms safely and they will be turned over to us.”

The Gun Amnesty program takes place annually and is hosted by the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police.
