Following a handful of very serious rail accidents over the last year in North America, there are growing concerns when it comes to hazardous materials being transported through communities. Here in Moose Jaw, it happens on an almost daily basis.

Dialoged has started between Canadian municipalities and the rail companies, who have agreed to let local fire departments know about what's coming through but Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison still has some concerns.

"That requires our first responders to have the proper training if there ever was an incident. What we're concern about is that these costs for training are not passed off to the municipalities. On top of that, if there was an incident, who's responsible for paying for the clean up afterwards?"

Here in Moose Jaw, our fire department has received a list of most dangerous materials that pass through the downtown core each year... and they believe they're ready to handle the situation if anything happens but Atchison says not all communities are so lucky.

Atchison is representing Saskatchewan at the meetings and is pleased with the fact that the list of materials is being provided.  Here in Moose Jaw, our fire department has received a list of most dangerous materials that pass through the downtown core each year and they believe they're ready to handle the situation if anything happens but Atchison says not all communities are so lucky.
