The 8th annual Paws for Pledges Radiothon on Country 100 is underway Friday, raising money for the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

Over the last 7 years, over half a million dollars have been raised through the fundraiser, all to help fund healthcare for the animals being sheltered, as well as food and other essentials.

Dana Haukaas with the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

"The average for a dog that comes in unfixed; by the time we get them fixed, we get them microchipped, their lifesaving vaccines, it's easily $300. For a cat, it's probably $200 by the time we get them fixed. Those vet expenses, from the vaccines, the microchip, and the spaying and neutering are by far the shelter's biggest expense each year."

Haukaas says their online auction this year has led to a big boost in pre-radiothon donations.

"People can get their bids in up until Monday at 11:59 pm. It has already, with the bids in right now, already doubled what we got last year. So far we've raised over $10,000."

The auction can be found on the Moose Jaw Humane Society Facebook page.

The twelve-hour radiothon is on Friday running from 6 am to 6 pm.
