Last year they saw a ton of local support and help to spread an important message, and that's exactly why they're doing it again.

The Moose Jaw & District Paramedics are participating in Movember in various ways, such as growing mustaches, sharing statistics about men's health, and encouraging residents to get checked by their doctors.

"Statistically... men actually die six years earlier than women, and things like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health [have an impact]," explained Corey McNeice, a local Advanced Care Paramedic. "Men don't always proactively think and talk about those things or get checked out when they should."

McNeice noted that just participating in the worldwide initiative opens the door for conversation and helps to normalize something that not everyone talks about.

"Men can see all over the world that everyone's growing mustaches, and it just maybe starts that conversation. Maybe some people do think or realize that it is [an issue], but it makes people click on that link and read those statistics. Hopefully, it'll make someone want to talk about their mental health safety, possibly getting their prostate checked, getting checked for cancer and everything like that."

Humbly, McNeice noted that what they're doing doesn't take a lot of work, but they're hoping it makes a big difference.

"It feels really good and it's something that's simple to do. We only have to grow a mustache and then just share the message. Seeing the money come in is really nice. Last year we raised $1,400, so this we're hoping to raise any more than that. It feels really good to be able to do it for the cause."

As of Monday they were around halfway to their goal with less than two weeks to get there. If you would like to donate to their Movember Canada group, click here.
