The Special Needs Advisory Committee is hosting a unique presentation featuring local first responders Thursday evening.

An Education and Wellness evening will see the Moose Jaw and District Paramedics and Police Service discuss a number of topics for anyone who is interested.

The advisory committee works closely with the City to make sure the needs of residents who may require extra assistance are met, according to Angela Sereda, of the local Paramedics and member of the committee.

"We're just here to provide education and just present a great evening of information to these individuals that if anyone has any questions they would feel comfortable asking," explained Sereda.

She noted that this evening will be a benefit to both sides, for residents who are looking for information and for the Police and Paramedics to have a chance to be able to create even more friendships and relationships with residents.

"I think that's what our hope is and that's why it's all about community engagement and getting out to the community as much as we can. Putting that friendly face out there so people don't feel scared or intimidated when they do have to activate the 9-1-1 system."

Although the Special Advisory Committee is hosting the event, Sereda said it's open to everyone as the information being shared is valuable to all residents.

"This is open to the public, the City of Moose Jaw is also promoting this event, anyone can come down to Council Chambers. It's from 7 pm to 8:30 pm and there will an opportunity for questions if people have (any) with a social afterward."

The portion of the presentation from the Paramedics will focus on what people can do if they're near someone who is suffering from a heart attack or stroke, what that may look like and the details they can relay to a 9-1-1 dispatcher, along with checking blood pressures and sugars. The second part of the event will feature a member of the Police Service who will go over how to decipher what to look for if someone is contacting you and may be trying to scam you through the internet or over the phone.
