The numbers from May’s traffic safety spotlight were released by SGI Tuesday morning.

With a focus on impaired driving, police reported 404 offences, 352 of which resulted in charges under the criminal code.

Tyler McMurchy is the manager of media relations with SGI. He said the Crown insurer wasn’t exactly shocked with the numbers, given the attention being put in place by law enforcement.

“We tell people every month the police are going to be focusing on whatever the traffic safety spotlight is, and we know police are very focused throughout the year on catching impaired drivers.”

Despite the numbers, in their release, SGI said they were cautiously optimistic the province’s impaired driving problem is beginning to get better. In 2017, the province saw the lowest number of deaths and injuries from collisions involving alcohol or drugs since the numbers started being tracked in 1988. Despite the decline, though, impaired driving is still the leading cause of death on Saskatchewan roads.

McMurchy explained the rules concerning impaired driving in Saskatchewan are some of the strictest in the country, outside of the usual penalties through the criminal code. Those with a blood alcohol level higher than .04 can find themselves facing license suspensions, vehicle impoundment and more.

For the month of June, SGI has had their traffic safety spotlight on new drivers.

Numbers from the month are expected to be released in late July.
