The provincial government is investing $2 million in new resources to support language and literacy programs for young children.

The announcement of the federal-provincial agreement was made at the Regina public library, and children six and under will be the beneficiaries.

Education minister Gord Wyant said the province is committed to providing families the supports needed for the development of these foundational skills.

Half a million dollars of the money will be used for early learning resources and supplement training and community events hosted by the Sask Literacy Network and KidsFirst. Another $400,000 will go to the literacy network for free training programs for parents to incorporate early literacy in programming and home life.

Some of the funding will be to purchase books in languages other than English, and those books will be made available in public libraries across Saskatchewan.

Anyone interested in the literacy programs can contact the province's literacy network at 1-888-511-2111 or go to saskliteracy.ca.
