This past weekend Moose Jaw was home to the 2017 Saskatchewan Special Olympic Summer Games, with roughly 150 volunteers and 250 athletes.

Many athletes, coaches and their families traveled to the friendly city to watch the various events, with the opening ceremonies taking place on Friday evening at Mosaic Place.

"I'm very proud of our community, they were very supportive," said Chair of the Games Organizing Committee, Mayor Fraser Tolmie. "They made this community feel welcoming."

Tolmie noted that many volunteers went above and beyond what was asked of them, and most of them finished the weekend with a few new friends.

"They built friendship and relationships with the athletes, it was awesome to see. There was young kids coming from La Ronge and Uranium City, we got to know a good portion of this province and building relationships with our own local athletes."

He said most volunteers who came out asked to stick around for a longer shift, or stayed to cheer on athletes from our city in their events.
