Tuesday morning local dignitaries and committee members met at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa for the official launch and logo unveiling of next year's 55+ Saskatchewan Provincial Seniors Games.

Margaret Gailing-Step, Provincial President for the Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association, said there's still lots of work to be done and they're going to need a large number of volunteers.

"That's why we ask surrounding cities and the city of Moose Jaw for all the volunteers to come forth, we just started in the planning stages, but I have all the confidence that this is going to come off as another successful games," said Gailing-Stepp.

She noted they'll be looking at roughly 125 spots to fill and there will be various roles a volunteer could play, such as score keeping to helping out with the banquet.

Lorne Lasuita was in attendance on behalf of the Saskatchewan Games Council and stated the significance of the competition for the athletes who participate.

"I think it's the opportunity, the opportunity not only to be able to not only become involved but to be able to test some of your skills that you may have learned when you were a little younger," explained Lasuita. "Recognizing that this event is sort of a lead up to a national competition."

Those who had been involved in the 55+ Saskatchewan Provincial Senior Games in the past all had something in common, that they were able to reconnect with friends and make new ones as well.

"I'm looking forward to meeting all the people that we see every time we have one of these meets and just the competition.... the whole thing, it's nice to meet the people and get in touch with the older friends," said past participant Gwendolyn Boivin.

Boivin will be competing in the triple jump, long jump, 100 and 200 metre and has set records in 4 events for Canada in the past.

The games will be held on July 10th-12th in 2018 in Moose Jaw.
