The provincial sales tax will not be applied to the federal carbon tax on SaskPower and SaskEnergy bills.

Premier Scott Moe said the provincial government has ensured you won’t be paying the provincial sales tax on top of the new carbon tax, which went into effect April 1st.

Provincial Finance Minister, Donna Harpauer, said the provincial government has been clear in its court challenge that they believe the imposition of the federal carbon tax is a violation of the Constitution and has no place in Saskatchewan.

The GST will be applied on the federal carbon tax on utility bills, the provincial government noted.

The case remains before an appeals court. In the meantime, the tax is being imposed on provinces that have not met the federal government’s requirements for carbon pricing.
