Just over a month ago, the demolition of the former pool facility at Buffalo Pound was complete, leaving a space and a missing attraction for the lake.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced today that plans included in the 2019-20 budget are in motion to build a new updated pool. Plans include two new buildings, a change-house and a building containing mechanical systems and admission services.

“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that the swimming pool at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is a key attraction for visitors,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “We are pleased to announce that a new swimming pool will open to the public during the summer of 2020.”

Some existing facilities will be re-purposed, which will result in cost savings to the project. The original pool opened in 1972 and has been a key attraction for park visitors and therefore, re-development is a priority for this government.

Preliminary estimates for the new facility including the pool, additional buildings and site developments are in the range of $2.5 million.

The new swimming pool is being designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users. The facility will be developed using universal design principles and will include a sloped accessible entry for young children or anyone with mobility concerns. The deeper portion of the pool will accommodate lane swimming and swimming lessons.
