It was just days ago that an unusual sight appeared on the shore of the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.

Around 30 fish died and had washed up onshore sometime last weekend after being found by a local fisherman.

It wasn't long after that the Ministry of Environment sent a conservation officer to explore the mysterious death of the fish.

Jenifer Merkowsky, a senior fisheries ecologist with the Ministry of Environment, explained how the fish died.

"The ice had broken up, and large masses had been pushed up onto the shoreline," she said. "The fish are known to congregate in that area and what we think happened is that the ice broke up quickly and it pilled up towards shows sweeping fish up with the ice movement and pushing them up onto the shore."

Merkowsky said that as far as she is aware, this is the first time she heard of anything like this happening at Saskatchewan Landing or in the province.

The approximately 30 fish that died featured Walleye, Whitefish, and Goldeye.

Merkowsky added that the cause of the fish dying was just nature at work.
