Instead of holding their annual International Dinner, the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council has gathered traditional recipes from all over the world into a digital recipe book.

Students taking language classes with the MJMC submitted recipes from the unique cuisines of their homelands.

Community Connections Coordinator, Tyler Bastedo explains where the idea came from.

"Our International Dinner is usually a great opportunity to share the cultures of our newcomers in our community with the rest of the community. We weren't able to do that this year but we still wanted to do something to celebrate Multicultural week and we wanted to keep it in line with our International Dinner and our shared culinary tradition. So we decided to make the cookbook."

Recipes in the book range from Congolese flatbreads, Chicken Stew from Somalia, and Cuban shrimp. Bastedo says even people have never heard of some of the dishes, they shouldn't be afraid to try them out.

"The students worked hard to prepare recipes that would be easy to do for somebody who's maybe never approached that type of cuisine before. A lot of them are dishes where you might already have all the supplies for in your pantry and you may only need to pick up a few new things. They're definitely easily accessible recipes."

The hope is that native Canadians in the community will be able to encounter and begin to understand the diverse cultures of their newcomer neighbors.

"Everyone always likes to share food; it's something that we can all relate to. And even if you don't share a language, you can always share food. So it's a really nice way to be able to share some of your culture in a positive and personal way."
