The Moose Jaw Multicultural Center hosted a racism forum yesterday, during which a Microsoft PowerPoint was presented by Community Connections Coordinator Tyler Bastedo.

A variety of people attended the event which was open to the public, including a member of the Moose Jaw Police Service.

The forum focused on racism in a lot of different ways including the types of racism, how to recognize it, and then how to reject it.

Tyler Bastedo spoke about Moose Jaw saying "Moose Jaw overall, I've been very proud of the community and the reception they've had for newcomers and the way the community has treated everyone. But there's always room for improvement, [and] we think education is important."

Tyler also spoke about education saying, "Schools have been much better over the last few years - education on these things has really improved. We have a very welcoming community and same with our educational institutions. And I think that's where it starts is with education, to really get ahead of these attitudes before they are formed."

A portion of the forum was dedicated to talking about how we as a society and as individuals can reject racism. Tyler gave this advice: "Speak out. Often times it only takes one person speaking up to turn the tide of either the situation or the mob per se; just one person being brave essentially can make a huge difference. It can make people recognize that maybe what they're doing is not okay. They might realize something that they just didn't consider."
