It's been a week since the official changes came into effect for speeding fines.

The increase came as a surprise to some, as we haven't seen a bump in price for having a heavy foot since the early 90s.

Each year officials continue to give out a large number of speeding tickets to drivers across the province and in the Friendly City, which is something Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth with the Moose Jaw Police Service is sympathetic to, but he knows it's also one way to deter some people from speeding.

"I certainly feel for people that have to pay the fines, but unfortunately that's what it does take to get the message through for people to slow down is when there are some consequences," said Sgt. Pilsworth.

He also noted that their frequent customers will notice rather quickly the change in price.

"For example, if your traveling 65 in a 50 zone... so your going 15 (km/h) over the speed limit, now you would be receiving a fine of $190."

Sgt. Pilsworth also noted that sometimes drivers are unintentionally going over the speed limit, which could be caused by distracted driving.

"There is no question that distracted driving is probably our greatest concern when it comes to traffic offences."
