2018 was the best year ever for Moose Jaw Crime Stoppers.

The mood seemed very high inside City Hall on Tuesday night as Moose Jaw Crime Stoppers held their Annual General Meeting(AGM). Their smiles started to make even more sense once a statement was read from Cst. Stenton MacNaughton, Crime Stoppers Moose Jaw Police Coordinator.

Below is the information shared with attendees at the AGM:

Moose Jaw Police Chief Rick Bourassa (C-R) is very pleased with the assistance provided by Moose Jaw Crime Stoppers.

-2018 was our second year in a row surpassing the 200 tips mark

-There was a total of 224 tips received

-8 tips were received in relation to the two homicides police investigated last year

-There were 12 tips provided that named a suspect of a vicious assault that was captured on a VLT camera

-42 tips that provided information relating to drug trafficking in Moose Jaw

One of the big reasons for their success? Social media.

According to the Moose Jaw Police, "There were 18 Crime Stoppers Facebook posts made in 2018 and each post averaged a reach of approximately 20,000 people. 10 of the 18 Facebook posts led to an arrest or a solved file."

"So much happens that we don't have a lot of information about," said Moose Jaw Police Chief, Rick Bourassa. "Gathering that information is so important. And Crime Stoppers allows that to happen in a way that would not get done otherwise."

"Social media is just what people use nowadays. There's so much information that can be gathered that way, so we'll keep exploring new ways to do that," said Chief Bourassa.
