Two Moose Jaw City Police officers will be conducting an independent external police investigation into the fatal shooting of a Fishing Lake First Nation man by an RCMP officer.

The man was shot after he was reported Tuesday to Wadena RCMP for causing a disturbance outside of a home. The man also appeared to be armed with a knife.

When the two officers arrived at the scene, they located the man and at least one of the officers discharged their firearm. The man was injured and was pronounced dead when EMS arrived on the scene.

Moose Jaw Chief of Police Rick Bourassa said that the Moose Jaw officers will be working in Wadena until the investigation into the man's death is complete.

"They're working in collaboration with the Coroner's office and there's also an Investigation Observer appointed by the Province that our members will be liaising with on that as well," he said. "So there are a number of different pieces at play on this."

Bourassa said that the Moose Jaw officers will be working in Wadena full time. He said their absence will leave a bit of a gap in the City Police regular service.

"There are some things that we do have to put on hold for a little bit of time, primarily administrative pieces. It always is a bit of a strain on resources. Recognizing though at the same time, there are times when we would ask another police agency to support us or do an investigation on our behalf, so it's a bit of sharing that happens."

Bourassa said he could not go into detail, but said that this is the third investigation the Moose Jaw Police have been involved in this year.
