Annual funding provided by the Moffat Family Fund was officially handed out on Tuesday, by the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery.

The room was filled with smiling faces of those who represent a dozen local non-profit groups or community organizations that in some form enrich the life of a child.

Karen Henders on behalf of the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation presented recipients with the official cheque from the Moffat Family Fund.

Karen Henders, Acting Executive Director for the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation(SSCF), and began the event by telling those in attendance about what they do and why they do it. The SSCF allocate the awarded grants annually from a large investment made by the Moffat family fund, which is design to give financial support to organizations in areas where they operated their media business.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to meet people that I've only ever talked to over the phone or corresponded with through email," explained Herders. "These folks are doing amazing work in their community, they're real leaders....so I was so pleased to be able to meet them and get to know them."

One of the twelve groups to receive some money was Moose Jaw Family Services, something that Vanessa Schaefer, Young Parent Program Coordinator was very pleased about. She said she's noticed some important needs within the city of Moose Jaw and surrounding communities in the south half of the province, one in particular would families who are going without basic groceries.

"Food Security has become an issue so we applied to the Moffat's and wanted to do a coupon program, so they could get milk fresh fruit, fresh vegetables to supplement when they're in need. We found a lot that someone didn't have a jug of milk and had a little babies at home, so we wholeheartedly wanted to get the project up and running again because our pilot project we did two years ago went wonderfully," said Schaefer.

But it wasn't just about people who provide meals for children in our city, Creative Kids were able to get some funding as well. Christie McColloch with their fund development sector, said this money will go a long way.

"It'll make a huge difference to the students we have in Moose Jaw, we estimate it'll support about twelve kids to be able to continue to participate in the music and dance programs that they love to engage in... in the local community."
