The excitement is collecting like a tidal wave over at Moose Jaw Pride as they recently unveiled their latest project.

Calling artists, supporters and anyone who's interested, they will be painting a mural on the back of their building in downtown Moose Jaw just in time for residents and visitors to enjoy it during Pride week at the end of May.

"We'll be working with Karli Jessup on that project and it's great because she's a part of the LGBT community as well, and also she's just super talented," explained Executive Director for Moose Jaw Pride, Joe Wickenhauser. "People are really excited, they think it's a cool idea and I think for our planning group and the local community people are excited to be a part of it. There have been lots of people telling me 'hey, make sure you let me know when the meetings are happening because I really want to be there.'"

Stating that the piece will be an opportunity for people to express themselves and also help to educate a milestone in LGBT history, the mural will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of same-sex acts in Canada.

"We're not coming at it with any specific plan. We're having these community meetings - we're going to have three meetings over the next two or three months. The meetings are going to be a place where people can discuss how they want to see themselves represented, how they want to see the history of our community represented. We also have a simultaneous group that's going to be doing workshops on how to execute that vision."

With keeping the canvas blank and welcoming all ideas at their upcoming meetings, Wickenhauser said it's unclear how the mural will turn out. The reason for going into it with an open mind is because they want to give participants a voice and a chance to convey themselves the way they want to be seen by those passing by the work of art.

"I think it's a really great opportunity for us to think about how we want to see our history represented and how we want to see our own community there. I think Moose Jaw has a really proud tradition of murals and for us to join that tradition and be a part of it, it's really great and it's coming in to be a part of the community in that way as well."

This project was able to go ahead once Moose Jaw Pride was granted funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board.
