A team of doctors and nurses are getting ready to embark on a medical mission to Guatemala next month; their third trip to the third world country - which is struggling to meet the large heath care demand of its people.

Knowing that every extra hand helps, the Moose Jaw International Medical Mission to Guatemala is stepping up and preparing to make the journey in February to volunteer their time, but first they need our help.

The team is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery, which will feature desserts, a silent auction, and a performance by local band Stadacona Soul.

Lead vocals for Stadacona Soul Sharon Church details what you can expect;

"Lots of great tunes from Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, lots of good Stevie Wonder songs. Songs that everyone will know and can sing along to if they choose to".

"Its such a great date-night. Come on out Saturday, there will be a silent auction, always amazing desserts, you can have a chance to talk with team members going to Guatemala. Its just a whole fantastic evening".

Local Nurse Jackie Wilson is one of those doctors and nurses volunteering their time, and she explains why missions like this are important;

"The people that we are working with in Guatemala do not have good access to public healthcare. They are either far too poor, or lots of them do not have a very good trust in their healthcare system. When they have the chance to have surgery or receive treatment from a team with our level of education and experience, they feel much better".

The Mission team will be working alongside Clinica Corpus Christi, a small 24 bed hospital and orphanage. Their goal is to perform 30+ surgeries during their time in Guatemala.

The event kicks off tonight at 6:30, with the show starting 7 pm. You can visit the groups Facebook page to learn more about the event and their medical mission.
