Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie and his fellow Councillors have accepted the word of the people and will not stand in the way of two cannabis retail permits being issued for Moose Jaw.

Residents had a chance to speak their piece at City Hall last night.

"The presentations were very respectful. I thought the tone was very respectful, and that's what we were looking for in our Council chambers. I was very impressed and pleased with that result."

While not one presenter was against the idea of retail cannabis stores in Moose Jaw and a Facebook Survey conducted by the City showed 84% of respondents were in favour of allowing the stores to operate, Tolmie says he received at least 45 letters against the move.

"I received some letters, and the numbers for that off the top of my head were 30 'For' and 45 'Against'. I think it's been a very fair process in getting information, and that was the whole point."

Tolmie is skeptical of cannabis sales happening by the start of July, but he says City Hall can't do much until the higher levels get their work done first.

"Canada's legislation is in the Senate, then it's also got to be dealt with on the provincial level, and then there's the lottery process which comes into place in order to get those dispensary licenses coming to the city. And then once you've got all that is the ability to get a supplier."
