With the snow eventually starting to melt later this month, the provincial government has declared March to be agricultural literacy month.

Agriculture will be brought to life in classrooms across the province to help students understand and connect with the industry, according to a release from the provincial government.

“This month is an opportunity to build trust by teaching children about modern food production and answering their questions,” said provincial agriculture minister David Marit.

This year’s theme is food waste and will allow students the chance to learn about their role in sustainability.

“Learning about food production process and how everyone plays a role is a valuable opportunity for all our students,” said deputy premier and education minister Gord Wyant.

Agriculture in the classroom program executive director Sara Shymko said that they are asking volunteers in the farming and ranching community to give their personal examples of how they are attempting to reduce food waste.
