Mac the Moose will be #1 again, according to the leader of our city.

A moose statue near Oslo, Norway currently holds the title of world's largest moose, making our local Mac now just the 2nd largest.

"Purposely they built their moose to be taller than ours," said Mayor Fraser Tolmie. "There's been talks about maybe making our moose the same height as theirs. But they had the chance to do the same and they chose not to. So we're going to face this head-on."

Mayor Tolmie is assuring residents that there will soon be changes to our local icon to reclaim his world record title, "that's going to happen."

The city says they are taking suggestions as to how Mac should be made bigger. "We want to live in a city that has the world's largest moose and not the 2nd biggest", said City Communications Manager, Craig Hemingway. "The mayor will then be making a statement on Monday after looking at suggestions."

Helping to lead the local charge in getting Mac's claim to fame back, is Tourism Moose Jaw's Jacki L'Heureux-Mason. She said the whole competition is all in good fun, and she's excited to see where it goes. "This is what it comes down to, this is fun. The world needed a feel-good story... this is the perfect one. Oslo has responded to us in the same good nature, they said 'no matter what you do, we're going to beat you' and I love it because what this does is it really just shines a light on the guardian of our city, the guy who's been here for the last 35 years, bringing people in off the highway. We get 150,000 people a year that take pictures with him," detailed L'Heureux-Mason.

More details about a plan of action and how our city leaders plan to compete with our friends in Norway will be discussed Monday morning at a news conference at Tourism Moose Jaw.
