It was nothing but sunshine and smiles at the Moose Jaw Fire Department Wednesday.

Local first responders and personnel opened their doors to the public during Fire Prevention Week, giving residents and students a chance to explore the building on South Hill, see the equipment they use and chat with the people who work at our fire department each and every day.

Many firefighters were in agreement that the highlight of the open house event was watching the children come through and show emergency officials how they would battle flames.

"For myself, it's probably entertaining the kids. They come in and we show them how the trucks work, the equipment that we use," explained Firefighter and Paramedic, Paul Busse. "Show them some videos, and we get a kick out of seeing them in action."

This year's local theme for Fire Prevention Week is 'Look.Listen.Learn. Be Aware.' Busse said it's about being prepared and assessing a situation when it happens.

"You're going to look to see what you're involved with, you're going to listen to what sounds it's making, and instead of feel we changed that to learn, for continuing education about Fire Prevention Week and fires themselves."

Busse noted that even as firefighters they are constantly learning and gaining knowledge in their area, along with pushing some of that information out to residents.

"That's why we're hosting this; it's always about ongoing education with us, we believe that through our in-house training and through the public as well. Being aware of the ongoing education that it takes to maintain a household with smoke detectors and things like that."

Fire Prevention Week wraps up on Saturday.
