Journey to Hope Moose Jaw held its annual event in Crescent park over the weekend, asking people to 'Get Loud for Mental Health'.

And one Moose Jaw resident, Dawn Froats, went above and beyond with her annual fundraiser for Journey to Hope, handing over quite the check to the organization worth an impressive $12,130.

She explains how she raised the money.

"This is my third year hosting the 'Make Froats Row' fundraiser. For every $10 that's raised I row 100 metres. Over three years we've raised over $27,000 for Journey to Hope. It's not easy, but it was never set up to be easy, and we never expected it to get as big as it did. It's really taken off, but it's all about the funds raised and about supporting the cause."

Froats recruited some friends to help with the rowing, with each rowing for about 5 hours. Without their help, Froats would have had to row for 10 hours straight.

She said she's going to continue the idea next year, but may make some changes to make it bigger than ever.

Froats tells us why she decided to raise money for Journey to Hope over the last three years.

"My best friend's son died by suicide a few years back. The fundraiser was really just about supporting her and letting her know she's not alone in this and really seeing the impact it had on her and her family, and never wanting to see that for anyone else. How do you make a difference? By providing funds for an organization to make changes in the community."

The tally for this year's Journey to Hope event has not yet been revealed, with donations still coming in.
