It's a story that had a happy ending after the Moose Jaw Police Service received a call to assist in an unusual rescue.

Constable Strube of the city service responded to the scene at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Hochelaga Street East, where a resident had come upon two ducklings trapped in a street drainage hole while they were attempting to shoo a mama duck and her little ones out of the middle of the street.

Not the kind of call that they prepare you for in police training, and there were challenges to the rescue due to the fact that the access was only five or six inches wide, but the hole itself was about 7 feet deep to where the ducklings had ended up. Strube said it was a team effort of onlookers who provided various items to try and fashion a tool that would be able to fit the small access and reach the bottom, and also be able to entice the babies to get in.

The initial "rescue tool" was a cup at the end of a string, but to no avail.  Constable Strube said that after the failed attempts with the cup, they attached a hat to a string, placed a little food in it, and were able to prompt the ducklings one at a time, to step into the hat and eventually be safely reunited with mom on street level again.
