It's a growing sport all around the world but especially here in Moose Jaw, Jiu-Jitsu is a Japanese Martial art though most folks practice Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu.

Nathan Bernard recently competed in Toronto where he won gold in his weight class and is now ranked number 1 in all of Canada and Number 5 in North America.

Bernard also coaches at Control Jiu-Jitsu here in town and explains a bit more of the club.

"We're down at 244 A river street West. You can just come down to the club the first week is always free. Whether or not you're just looking to defend yourself, lose some weight, feel better about yourself, or just have fun. We have a great team down there are girls, guys, kids, everybody."

Bernard explained how he got introduced to Jiu-Jitsu.

"I was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu by a football buddy of mine just trying to stay in shape in the offseason. He said 'come out and do Jiu-Jitsu with me'. In my first class, I saw a girl with a purple belt on and she was the one I was matched with. She grabbed me and I did not know this was possible, she just slithered out to my back and choked me and that was when I was hooked."

Bernard added that CJJ also offers a free women's class for any woman looking to learn how to defend themself.
