Central Butte children had an extra reason to look forward to the last day of school on Wednesday - the opening of their new splash park.

Unveiled as the "Letts Splash and Play Park", the recreation facility is a new summer fun option for young families in the community of 372, about 100 kilometres northwest of Moose Jaw on highway 42.

"The Letts family was raised in Central Butte," explained Splash Park committee member Nicole Hallborg on how the park got its name. "They gave a sizeable donation, but it's also a way for us to thank the family for their contributions to the town for many years. They host a golf tournament every year, with the proceeds going to the health foundation, Rec Board, and Ivermain place, which helps keep all those things running."

Hallborg said it was "pretty overwhelming" to see the kids finally able to use the facility Wednesday afternoon, following two intense years of fundraising.

Hallborg says the original target was $243,000.

"We reached it in just over two years and we're at the $273,000 mark now," she stated. "The sponsorships have been so overwhelming. The community saw this need and supported this whole-heartedly."
