Residents are speaking out against the new subdivision that was proposed to city council last week, that would be built in the heart of the River Valley.

The proposed River Point Park subdivision would include 29 single-family units and 81 multi-family units, and one resident has started a 'Leave Our Valley Alone' Facebook Group, and an online petition calling for residents to step up and speak against the development.

Creator of the group and petition, Caron Berg.

"I'm encouraging everyone to write letters to council, there's also been a lot of feedback in the group on different ways that we can do this. I know that the best way is always by letter in hand. The deadline is October 19, so we're encouraging everyone to get their letters in. I'm hoping to speak at an upcoming meeting as well."

Berg goes on to say that her family has owned property overlooking the valley for over 40 years and that the valley just off of Keith Crescent has become a favourite when it comes to spending time outdoors.

"Many will be affected by the possibility of an obstructed view by the apartment complex, but that aside, people of all ages have come out to the valley this year more than ever because of COVID. It's peaceful to be able to enjoy the surrounding nature and its quietness, and the beauty down there is one of a kind. It should be left untouched."

The City is also encouraging public feedback on the proposed amendment to the City's Official Community Plan to allow the development.

Questions and comments can be directed to the Planning and Development Services through email at planning@moosejaw.ca, or by phone at 306-694-4443.

Letters regarding the consultation process will be delivered to all residents within a 250 metre radius of the proposed site.

All written submissions to be considered by City Council must be received by Monday, October 19 at 10 AM.
