Holy and jolly but are you also safe and sound this holiday season? The Moose Jaw Fire Department is reminding everyone to take a few extra moments to make sure that holiday decorations are not going to put your home at risk.

Fire Chief Rod Montgomery says fire safety isn't always the first thing we think about while decorating but it should be something we consider.

"If you're using a natural Christmas tree, keep the trunk in water at all times, keep your tree away from any ignition source such as your fireplace, any type of space heater or candle," said Montgomery. "And then when you decorate it and you're using electrical cords, make sure that they're not frayed and that they're safe."

And with fire places, Montgomery says resist the urge to put decorations near the mantel if the fireplace is going to be used. It's easy for a spark to jump from the fire and onto decorations, creating a potentially serious situation.
