The Johnson and Johnson vaccine, Janssen, will be available in Saskatchewan starting tomorrow.

The province's initial supply of 2,500 single-dose Janssen vaccines is scheduled for clinics in Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Estevan, Prince Albert, Melfort, Swift Current, North Battleford and Lloydminster.

Janssen is available to residents 18 years of age and older. Due to the limited number of doses received and potential demand, these doses will be available at a walk-in clinics.

"Janssen appointments cannot be booked online through the patient booking system. They are based on a first-come-first-serve basis and as long as supplies last," said Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency president Marlo Pritchard.

The Johnson and Johnson vaccine is a viral vector vaccine approved for use in Canada by Health Canada.

Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said, although the Janssen vaccine was suspended at one point in the United States, it is safe.

"The Janssen vaccine initially when it was deployed, there were some concerns about rare thrombotic events, much less frequent than even AstraZeneca, one in 500,000, but after review, the Janssen vaccine continued to be given in the U.S. and many countries of the world," Shahab said.

This vaccine is single-dose and recipients are considered "fully vaccinated" 14 days after receiving one dose.

Inclement weather may delay vaccine deliveries, check the SHA website for up-to-date details.
